Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex

Mitsunaga & Associates, Inc. (MAI) was selected to provide professional services to the University of Hawaii when they proposed to replace the existing bleachers at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Field at the Makai Campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa.  The bleachers would be replaced with a new facility to include about 2,500 bleacher seats and ancillary facilities, including a ticketing area, two locker rooms, coach’s offices, restrooms, a concession area with kitchen/prep spaces, and storage areas.  In addition, two beach volleyball courts were added to the project site after the NCAA deemed beach volleyball a sanctioned sport in the spring of 2012.  The intent was to consolidate athletic facilities to allow for the Clarence T.C. Ching Field to fully realize its potential as a center of student activity.  It also housed the only all-purpose track & field and soccer facility on campus.  This new structure would be named the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.

The Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex was designed and built sustainably, ultimately earning a LEED Gold Certification with a total of 61 points throughout all 7 LEED categories.  Strategies such as utilizing low emitting and recyclable materials, demarcating low-emitting vehicle (LEV) stalls, water and energy usage far below the baseline averages, and on-site renewable energy that diverted 76% of the project waste from landfills were incorporated into the project.  MAI was able to produce a sustainably responsible building designed with thought for the environment and future use.
