Project Owner: Kamehameha Schools
Project Dates: 2012
The Kamehameha Schools Middle School Redevelopment Project is the first phase of a larger master plan for Kamehameha Schools to transform their Kapalama Campus. The Middle School was designed for 7th and 8th graders to accommodate approximately 720 students.
Mitsunaga & Associates, Inc. (MAI) designed the layout of the learning spaces based on a open style of teaching, which models the current Council of Educational Facilities Planners International (CEFPI) goals for middle school education. Along with the standard core curriculum classrooms, the facility also provides additional learning spaces for elective subjects such as music, multi-media, art, industrial technology, Hawaiian language, and family & consumer science. Other accessory amenities include a 360-seat dining facility with a full kitchen, administrative areas, library, health & fitness center, and an outdoor amphitheater which serves as the central feature for the middle school.
Inclusive of this project was the design of two new dormitories that provide accommodations for approximately 104 middle school students. Other dormitory amenities include a common activity area, resident aide living quarters, as well as laundry and study areas.
Sustainability was also a consideration for the design of the buildings, incorporating features such as passive irrigation for landscaping, photovoltaic panels, high efficiency chillers, occupancy sensors, energy efficient lighting, and water saving plumbing fixtures.
